This is not a very common phenomenon. But it can happen that a group of worker bees, maybe around 100 individuals, will congregate in a very tight cluster around the queen. It is thought that this is an attempt to protect the queen, but it can also lead to the death of the queen and is an indication that something is not quite right in the colony.
